Saint Juliana of Nicodemia Essay Example for Free

Saint Juliana of Nicodemia Essay The saint I chose for Confirmation is Saint Juliana of Nicomedia. A saint is a person who lived a moral, compassionate, and holy life who can be a role model to Catholics. You are supposed to choose a saint for Confirmation because you need someone to look up to for support. During tough times, you could ask for assistance through your journey of life. Saint Juliana lived in Nicomedia during the rule of Diocletion. This ruler was inflicted much persecution on people of different religions and had ery cruel punishments established. Both of Juliana’s parent were pagans and betrothed her to the senator, Eleusius. Juliana denied strongly for she was a bride of Christ and always worshiped secretly away from her parents and fiance. Her love for Christ persisted and Eleusius at last found out about her secret faith. He constantly asked her to turn away from Christ and accept his proposal, for the government would get to her and kill her. Her parent pleaded but Juliana’s love for Christ persisted. Finally the government got involved and Juliana was tortured endlessly in all sorts of cruel ways. In the end, she got beheaded. Juliana suffered Christian martyrdom and is usually represented with a devil whom she leads by a chain. I chose Saint Juliana because of her relentless mindset. She was never ashamed of her faith. Juliana was taken to her limit in all she did for Christ. She was tortured, killed, and persecuted all for her faith. I ask her to give me courage and strength when people question my faith.

A Soldier Always At War English Literature Essay

A Soldier Always At War English Literature Essay Many war veterans have a hard time adjusting to life after war. What happened in the war is always on their mind. What they went through was so tragic that they cannot forget about what happened. Krebs in Earnest Hemingways Soldiers Home is struggling to adapt to normal life after coming home from World War I. He is not the same person he was before the war, I dont love anybody (169). His view on the world is different. He even sees women in a different way than he did before, Besides he did not really need a girl. The army had taught him that (166). Krebs came home from the war later than most of the other soldiers. People in his hometown do not have the patients to listen to his war stories. He may feel that people do not understand what he went through His town had heard too many atrocity stories to be thrilled by actualities (165). It also may make him feel like he is different than everyone else. Since no one wants to hear about his stores, and he does not want to take any conse quences of living in a civilized manner, he can never move on in his life from the war. The saying you cant go home again relates to Krebs because the war is always on his mind and he cannot escape it. Hemmingway makes a clear distinction in the story between the two names that Krebs goes by. His family still calls him Harold; the text refers to him by Krebs. Before the war, Krebs is known as Harold. Harold was an innocent boy. His life was simple. He did not have much experience of the world. He had enlisted to the war from a Methodist college. He enlisted to the Marines most likely because many of his friends enlisted. Like many whom enlisted during the time, he had not had any experience in the battlefield. The death of his friends, and fellow people that he knew was tragic. The death he saw from the war scarred him. His family always knows him as Harold I had a talk with your father last night, Harold (167). After the war though, Krebs left behind a part of himself back in Europe. He never talks about how bad the battles were. He was in some of the bloodiest battles in the war. He never talks about them because he does not want to relive them. The battles changed him because he saw so much death. He is no longer Harold. The war had such an impact on him that he turned into a completely different person. No one recognizes this new person. Other than the change of names the war changed Krebss view on women. In Europe it was all about the sex. He does not want a relationship with a woman in his own town because relationships are complicated, and he does not want to take any risks and lose anything else. Krebs did not have to communicated much with the French or German girls, But he would not go through all the talking (167). Having a relationship is too much work for Krebs. All he cares about it the sex, You couldnt talk much and you did not need to talk (167). Doing all the work to get a girl is too much work. Krebs just returned home and is not used to the women. At Germany he did not have to do much to get attention from them There is a picture which shows him on the Rhine with two German girls and another corporal. Krebs and the corporal look too big for their uniforms. The German girls are not beautiful (165). The only way that he could have a relationship is to more on from what happened from the war, but he is ha ving too much of a hard time. Krebss family knows that he needs to move on from the war. They try to encourage him to drive the family car. They likely do this so that Krebs can have more freedom. They may think that letting him have the ability to drive the family car will make him want to do other things like getting a job or going back to school He thinks you have lost your ambitions, that you havent got a definite aim in life (169). Krebs says he loves no one, because he does not want to take any consequences. They wanted him to get a job but, Krebs does not want to do it. His mother is probably the most desperate person to want him to move on. She prayed for him to try to give him some hope, but Krebs does not think much of it. He does not want to do what his mother and father ask him to do, because he wants to live a simple life. He no long has any ambition like his father predicts. He lost that during the war. He sees his sister play baseball because she is much like he wants to be. Young, innocent, and si mple. That is what Krebs wants to be after the war. Krebs may never go back to who he once was. He has to move on from the war to be able to achieve anything in his life. He is always remembering what happened in the war. He wishes he was back in Germany sometimes. He also needs to tell people about his stories without lying about it. Before he left the war, he fit in well with his hometown. Now he is an outcast to everyone. He will not take any chances in life anymore. He saw too many people die in the war from taking chances. The saying you cant go home again may live with Krebs his entire life. His views may never change. He may never move on. His family still knows his as Harold, but he will remain to be Krebs as long as he decides.

Unemployment in Hong Kong :: Economics, Unemployment Essays

Introduction The unemployment rate became a hot topic in the past few months when it rose to 3.5 per cent, a recent high for almost 10 years. The jobless rate was higher than the 3.2 per cent unemployment rate recorded in the May to July period. The underemployment rate in the June to August period rose to 2.5 per cent from 2.3 per cent in the May to July period. Until recently, most workers who lost their jobs were from the manufacturing sector. They were middle-aged factory workers with few skills and little education. But in recent months a large number of employees have been laid off in the retail and restaurant businesses. Unemployment has spilled over to the service sector from manufacturing sector. Hong Kong is facing a prolonged economic downturn. The high unemployment rate has raised many social and economic problems. For example, the number of people who commit suicide is increased. It is because more people had lost their jobs for a long time. It is a serious threat to the lives of the poor. The unemployed people may also feel that it is unmeaningful to live. As a result, they will commit suicide to solve the problem. Moreover, the high unemployment rate results in the increase of the rate of crime. There was an unemployed man who stole rice because he was too hungry and he did not have money to even buy food! We can know how serious the unemployment rate is. By the way, higher unemployment rate causes lower purchasing power of people. A lot of kinds of business are affected. Many people lose confidence in economics of Hong Kong. They do not believe unemployment will be improved. Some say that the Government should provide immediate assistance for the jobless. Some also say unemployment is due to the attraction of cheap labor across the border. The Government can no longer play the role of a bystander. All of these above show the influence of the unemployment. In spite of how many people who have talked about the topic of unemployment, everyone will be concerned about this topic. The following sections will analyze this hot topic. Reasons for unemployment in Hong Kong 1. Faster growth in total labor supply relative to that of total employment In 1993 and 1994, the increase in Hong Kong labor force is 2.9% and 3.5% respectively. At the end of 1993, the total labour supply is 2 970 000. Change in the total labour supply is determined by the population growth, total employment and the emigration condition. If the population growth and the total

A Life Lived in Scouting Essays -- Personal Narrative Boy Scouts Paper

A Life Lived in Scouting 1986: Introduction to the Mystery After the skits, songs, and cheers, the Camp Director (bearing a white sash embroidered with a red arrow and two bars at each end) came forward. The crowd instantly grew quiet and somber. The wind rustled; the branches swayed and cracked; the lake gently lapped the shore. Sitting with my father, I watched bats flutter above two great fires. In a clear yet reverent tone, the weathered old man invoked the beauty of nature, the mystery of life, and the Great Spirit. In solemn words, he added, â€Å"Each has his own path, let the Scout Oath and Law light that path.† A quiet tenor, the Camp Director began to sing. With intimate familiarity, uniformed men, women, and boys rose adding their voices to his. â€Å"My paddle's keen and bright Flashing with silver Swift as the wild goose flight Dip, dip and swing Dip, dip and swing her back Flashing with silver Follow the wild goose flight Dip, dip and swing† Faces stern, backs straight, heads held high, each waited; and, silence fell. Still seated by my father, I watched the fire of fellowship, bright against the water, cast long shadows across the faces of the crowd— the other stood unlit, no flame lived within it or brought warmth to the people. From the distant shore, a canoe entered the water and silently approached— the paddlers in smooth perfect unison. Mateo, messenger of the Leni-Lenape, stood erect and proud in the stern of the canoe. From a pot of flame, Mateo reached and drew a single arrow. Putting notch to string, Mateo released the arrow and smote the lifeless fire. Flame rose from its depths and the voice of Chief Allowat Sakima boomed across the water, across the fire circle, and echoed forth. â€Å"I am ... ... the last song of the final campfire and invokes the memory of all that have come before in Scouting. It is, to Scouts, a sacred song. The light dimmed still further and as we reached the top of the stairs. We stood together, finished humming, and walked down to the car. We shared our final night of Summer Camp together— two weeks later I went off to Basic and my father died in August of 2000. July 2004 will be my first Summer Camp in six years. â€Å"Scouting may be indefinable but it is palpable; and, it moves men and boys to become better human beings through their journey together.† First Verse of Scout Vespers Softly falls the light of day, While our campfire fades away. Silently each Scout should ask Have I done my daily task? Have I kept my honor bright? Can I guiltless sleep tonight? Have I done and have I dared Everything to be prepared?

Adolf Hitlers Leadership and the Government that Follows Essay

Leadership, and the Government that Follows Measuring a ruler’s success can easily be defined in the satire Animal Farm. The spoof is based on a totalitarian leadership. The four main characters in this book are the pigs on the farm. They go against Napoleon’s will and represent the white movement. The reason this story becomes prevalent in the essay is because it shows how few people can turn around a society. Orwell describes in animal farm just how he got his idea for the novel. â€Å"I saw a little boy, perhaps ten years old, driving a huge cart-horse along a narrow path, whipping it whenever it tried to turn. It struck me that if only such animals became aware of their strength we should have no power over them, and that men exploit animals in much the same way as the rich exploit the proletariat.† This is the exact idea that Adolf Hitler had. If the people knew just how much strength they had as a whole, it was enough to over throw the power of one man. In Animal Farm, the pigs didn’t feel as if they were being treated equally and were able to over throw one leader who just so happens to be Mr. Frederick, the tough owner of Pinchfield who portrays Germany, or in finer terms, Adolf Hitler. Adolf Hitler was a dictator of the German Nazi movement. He was born April 20, 1889 in the small Austrian town of Braunau. After a prior act in elementary school, Adolf soon became rebellious and began failing in the Realschule, which is a college preparatory school. After going through this dispute he finally left school all together by 1905. He refused to give in to the normal training of a regular job, so he began his years of amateur painting and dreaming of becoming a famous artist. This is the part many do no know of Hitler. He was ver... ...d in a communism no one rules essentially and with no power there are different eqallines which causes unfair rules and ends in the failure of a country. The reason why America is as strong as we are is because we have the democracy needed to have everyone living in peace. There are its downfalls, every country experiences them, yet our strenth as a whole picks us up everytime. It is the strenth created, practiced, and performed by the people which makes America’s leadership the best one to live under. Every person wants the chance to live in America, and its because of the system established that makes it so desirable. Leaders such as Adolf Hitler were great dictators, yet lacked the knowledge to keep their country the strongest in the world. Our laws and legislations are not always fair or right, but they adhere well to everyone and has set guidelines for us all.

Life of a College Student Essay

I personally go to school full time and work a part time job. Although at times it might seem difficult to keep up with school, work and studying, it is actually quite doable as long as you are able to manage your time and work productively. This relates to both McLellan’s â€Å"The Dead-End Kids† and Brown’s â€Å"Balancing Act: High School Students Making the Grade at Part-Time Jobs† because each article gives good reasons as to why working part time and going to school could affect students in a positive way. Working a part time job while going to school will not only affect students positively but also give them an idea of what the real world is going be like. Working a part time job while attending school will give students valuable skills in which they could apply to their daily lives. â€Å"Working also has helped her to learn to manage both her time and money† said McLellan (306). When juggling between school and work, it is very crucial that students learn to manage their time wisely in order to get all their work done. They would have to make a schedule and plan when they would do homework and study around their work and school hours. For example, instead of playing video games during their lunch break they could be doing homework or studying. Being employed also teaches young adults how to manage their money. The author introduced an example said by Charlotte â€Å"The job has actually strengthened my GPA since I’ve taken on additional responsibilities† (qtd. 310). When adding on duties or responsibilities to one’s schedule, usually the person learns to adapt to the change and becomes more responsible. They begin to realize that they don’t have time to full around or slack, they need to do what they have to do in order to move onto the next task. They learn how to handle their money and use it on necessities such as school supplies or clothes and save the rest. Instead of spending their money on drugs and entertainment, they can save it and buy books or even a car. Overall, students not only learn how to manage their time, but also how to manage their money; all in which display the act of becoming responsible. Along with becoming responsible, young adults will get a taste of how the real world is going to be. McLellan says, â€Å"Part-time work during the school year [†¦] builds character, teaches responsibility and prepares them for entering the adult world† (306). Students are practically clueless when they are extremely dependent and living off of their parent’s money. Once they gain an income and start buying their own clothes and accessories they realize the true value of a dollar. Money doesn’t come easy, you have to earn it and manage your expenses. Once realizing this, young adults begin to be more appreciative of what their parents have done and they also begin to get an idea of what the real world is going to be like. Brown shared a quote by a student â€Å"[†¦] Working keeps me out of trouble† (qtd. 309). Once students add on responsibilities such as working part time while attending school they begin to realize that there really is no time for fully around and other shenanigans. They understand that in the real adult world, they aren’t going to be able to afford to mess around; the adult world is strict business. Nothing is for free in this world, everything virtually has a dollar price and teens realize this once they start working and paying for their own stuff. However, there are others who believe it isn’t a good idea to work part time while going to school Others believe that it is inefficient for students to work a part time job while going to school. They might say â€Å"Extensive part-time employment during the school year may undermine youngsters’ education† (McLellan 306). Some people think that work interferes too much with school and that it doesn’t respect the fact that students have tight schedules. However, this is not the case for many working environments. My job personally assigns me hours around my school schedule so that I’m not only able to attend school but also work part time. This is good for me because I am still able to have an income that will pay for not only my schooling but for my necessities. Some jobs even offer grants for school if you’re able to maintain a high GPA and work a specific amount of hours per week. This is good because it not only encourages students to do well in school but it also gives them a reason to keep the job and save money. Although work does take up more time of your day, it doesn’t interfere with school as long as you manage your time wisely and work productively. Along with getting a glimpse of the real adult world, students will also gain positive attributes from working a part time job while going to school. They will not only learn how to manage their time wisely but also how to manage their money. Students begin to grow more responsible not only with juggling school and work, but also in decision making. â€Å"Working part time while going to school was one of the best decisions of my life† said Anna Shoemoch.

Glucose Tap Water Essay

1. Monosaccharides and polysaccharides are two classes of Carbohydrates 2. Long chains of amino acids make up Proteins_ and contain the atom _Nitrogen which is unique to this macromolecule. 3. Fats like triacylglycerols are the macromolecule ___lipids_____. 4. You just reviewed type of carbohydrates. Glucose is a simple sugar called a monosaccharide , whereas starch contains compound carbon chains and is a polysaccharide . 5. Polysaccharides are formed by a dehydration synthesis reaction between monosaccharides. What does this mean? Water molecules are removed from the bond. 6. For each of the following tests, please circle which substance would give a positive result: a. Benedict’s test – glucose tap water oil (lipid)) starch protein b. Starch test – glucose tap water oil (lipid)) starch protein c. Sudan IV test – glucose tap water oil (lipid)) starch protein d. Biuret test – glucose tap water oil (lipid)) starch protein 7. All proteins contain carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and what other element? Nitrogen 8. When one glycerol molecule covalently bonds via dehydration synthesis with three fatty acid molecules the resulting macromolecule is called a __lipid_________. 9. What are the two general categories of carbohydrates? Starch and cellulose ID the test: Sudan IV, Benedict’s, Biuret, Starch 10. The cloudy, orange color that shows a positive result for the __Benedict’s____ test is due to simple sugars reducing cupric ions to cuprous ions which oxidize to form copper oxide. 11. If a solution contains macromolecules that test positive for the Biuret test, light refracts from copper-containing rings to produce a violet color. 12. The reagent used in the _Sudan IV__ test is soluble in lipid, but not in water. Adding ethanol to test solutions is necessary. Uses of Macromolecules 13. Explain the difference between lipids and carbohydrates with respect to energy use and storage. Lipids store energy as â€Å"backup energy† to be used when the carbohydrates are all burnt up. Carbohydrates are less complex and therefore easier to break down than lipids. The body stores lipids as fat cells were carbohydrates are stored as sugars. 14. Fully describe at least five uses of proteins in the body. -Motion of cells depends on proteins -They catalyze reactions in cells -Transportation of material in body fluids is dependent on protein. -They form receptors for sending signals throughout the body. -Proteins are stored in muscle tissues 15. Fully describe the differences between DNA and RNA. RNA is responsible for transporting genetic code from the nucleus to the ribosomes. DNA stores the genetic code so it does not travel and therefore can be safe in the nucleus. DNA contains the genetic instructions while RNA transports the proteins needed to create the genetic instructions. Without RNA there would not be any DNA.
